Vici Gaming interview was taken during their Media Day at the Shanghai Major, so before they actually got to play in the group stage. A lot of subjects have been discussed and as per usual iceiceice stood out with his trolling answers.
It hasn’t been an exactly perfect competitive year for the Chinese teams and their results from the Shanghai Major are saying a lot about the current form of the Chinese Dota. One of their stronger team,Vici Gaming will start the main event from the lower bracket, a seed where not many of us would have predicted for them.
But it seems that the Chinese scene is dealing with much deeper problems and just a quick look at the surface or even judging them only based on their play style is not what would give a proper perspective on the Chinese dota of today.
When asked about Ace, the Chinese structure that is in charge and takes care of the professional community, and their way of handling the Dota 2 scene in China the answers were unexpected to say the least:
Daryl Koh 'iceiceice' Pei Xiang:
“
Are they even still involved in Chinese Dota, because they seem to be more involved with League of Legends which is in some sense a bigger game and they have much more to say and more power there? You know, right now at the Dota competitions should be familiar faces from Ace but we don’t really get to see them at events anymore so I’m not sure how involved they still are with Dota. ”
Xu "fy" Linsen:
“
In China there are a lot of younger teams and players, we have a new generation of players but it seems they haven’t really got to shine as much as they should. They didn’t get to play into major tournaments, like they either not getting invited or they don’t even get a chance to play qualifiers, there’s always the same pair of hands that play at these sort of tournaments. Where in the West there’s a lot of fresh blood, a lot of new faces are getting a chance to shine and prove themselves and that hasn’t be really happening here
Really, how about CDEC Gaming?
Well many of them have been actually playing for a long time in China. Xz for example was my teammate in two youth Chinese teams in the past and many of them have been around for quite some time but if you consider them a new team you probably mean they are the better performers. ”
Asked about how the communication with Valve works for the Chinese teams and why no player from the region was invited at the Valve’s offices for the players meeting iceiceice said:
“
we did feel that that it was a bit strange that no Chinese players or teams were invited to that meeting but probably that happened because of their relationship with Ace and Perfect World. We do feel that we missed out on that and we do have some important things to say in terms of events and tournaments and other concerns we would like to communicate to them but we still hope we can have an open meeting and discussion with them. For example at this Major it seems that are numerous of things that should have been dealt with beforehand and this type of things we would like to discuss them openly.”
The full interview is a roller-coaster that takes us through how VG celebrated the Chinese New Year, what do they tell to new people that they meet about their professional career, how do they relax and spend the free time outside the game and finally what are their expectations for this Major in terms of team’s placement.
What would it be an unsatisfactory result here at the Shanghai Major for Vici Gaming?
Daryl Koh 'iceiceice' Xiang:
“
Anything below first place means failure, it doesn’t matter what competition we’re playing, doesn’t matter how big or small the event is, if we don’t win it means we’ve failed.”
Xu 'BurNIng' Zhilei :
“
I do share some of his thoughts (referring to iceiceice) but for this Major my expectations are a bit lower. We haven’t performed particularly well in a while now and this is a big competition, we do of course want to have a successful run here so I would say we would be pretty pleased if we finish top three at this event, it will be a great boost for what’s about to come , with TI and such.”
